How to Help

What you can do to make this stressful time easier on everyone.

Defending yourself against a virus

COVID-19 is a new virus that, until the recent pandemic, had not previously been detected. Because of how new the virus is, there’s been lots of misinformation and fear all around. Currently there is no cure, no approved treatments, and no vaccines; therefore, the best and only course of action is to limit exposure and disinfect thoroughly - both to protect yourself, and other people. Heres what you can do to defend yourself against the virus.

1. Disinfect

Coronavirus is primarily spread by contact with an infected person, or an infected surface. It’s been shown to survive for up to 3 hours in the air, and 2-3 days on plastic and steel. However, there are plenty of options for disinfecting. Aside from the commercial chemicals accepted to kill the virus, there are a handful of great at-home disinfectants. Soap and water >70% alcohol 10% dilute bleach

2. Wear a real mask

Studies show that since COVID-19 can survive in the air, a face mask can drastically reduce the chances of being infected. However, that’s only true if you use the proper mask, and understand how to use one. Filtering respirators work very well to reduce the risk of infection and are the only type of masks proven to protect. Surgical masks and cloth masks provide some protection, and may be better than nothing, but most people increase the risk of infection using these by messing with them.

3. Stay home

The number one way to keep yourself from contracting COVID-19 is to stay away from public places, and limit face-to-face contact to those in your household. Social distancing is our best defense as humans against a very real threat. As boring as it may be, it’s necessary to protect the more vulnerable in our communities.
